Summary: This two-hour session introduces participants to some of the building blocks for how computers work. We start with Count the Dots- understanding binary numbers and extend to mapping and graphs, patterns and sorting problems and cryptography. Participants leave with a deeper appreciation and understanding of computer science and loads of ideas on how to teach their students about the basics of computing while enhancing their writing skills. We will also provide participants with links to free resources they can download and use in their own classrooms. Happy computing!

Biography: Dr. Bobby Jeanpierre is an Associate Professor of Methodology, Measurement and Analysis at the University of Central Florida, Orlando. Her research is focused on STEM and citizen science. Currently, she is a faculty member in the Department of Education and Human Sciences where she works with teachers across all grade levels. She has taught students in grades K- post secondary and has extensive experience doing hands-on, minds-on inquiry-based science and mathematics. Dr. Elsie Olan is an Assistant Professor of English and Language Arts Education- Secondary level at the University of Central Florida, Orlando. Currently, she is a faculty member in the School of Teaching, Learning and Leadership. She has substantial experience working with both pre-service and in-service teachers across all grade levels. Her research interest is focused on the intersection between literacy and STEM education.
